Gregory B. McCoy, MD

Specialty: General Urology, Robotic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery

Gregory B. McCoy, MD, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology. He is a Fellow of the American Urologic Association, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Oregon Urologic Society and a Delegate of the Multnomah County Medical Society. Dr. McCoy's interest in urology is driven by his interest in helping patients make dramatic improvements in their health without sacrificing quality of life.

"Removing a cancerous organ, such as the prostate, while (allowing patients to maintain) normal urinary and sexual function, is very gratifying," says Dr. McCoy. "Removing a kidney stone from a patient in excruciating pain and sending him home two hours later is huge."

Dr. McCoy received his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University in 1977 and earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt Medical School in 1981. He completed his internship and residency at Oregon Health & Science University in 1987. He has been practicing in Portland since 1987.

Dr. McCoy has sub-specialized in robotic prostatectomy, seed implants for prostate cancer, laser and microwave treatment of prostatic obstruction, endoscopic kidney stone procedures and other minimally invasive surgery techniques. He also specializes in no scalpel vasectomy, microscopic vasectomy reversal and sling procedures for female incontinence. He is encouraged by the technological advances being made and the ways in which they are changing people's perceptions of urology.

"The old concept that any sort of prostate surgery will end a man's sex life or leave him incontinent is no longer valid, thanks to a variety of technologies, including robotics, seed implants, cryotherapy (freezing), lasers and microwave," he adds. "At The Urology Clinic we undoubtedly have the most well-rounded group of urologists in the state, who pride themselves in being at the leading edge of technology. They are nice and compassionate doctors, also."

Dr. McCoy believes in going above and beyond in offering patients options and explanations. He stresses education as a crucial component of treatment.

"I believe in educating patients and allowing them to participate in making decisions in how they would like to be treated," he explains. "One size does not fit all."

In his free time, Dr. McCoy enjoys fishing, golfing, biking, cooking, cinema and literature. He believes laughter can go a long way toward helping all of us enjoy life.
